MCD begins sealing of commercial units, protests by traders, common

New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi today began sealing commercial units in several residential areas following the recent notification by the Urban Development Ministry withdrawing exemption granted to several units under the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006.

The MCD's sealing drive was met with protests in several areas of Delhi. In Sant Nagar area of Karol Bagh zone, the sealing drive met with protests by traders and common people.

More than 100 properties were sealed by the MCD in areas under the South zone, Nazafgarh zone, Civil lines, Central zone and Karol Bagh zone.

In Sadar Paharganj Zone 31 properties were sealed at Chitragupta Road and Rajguru Road, while in South Zone, 14 properties were sealed at East of Kailash, Sant Nagar and Zamrudpur.

In Najafgarh Zone one property was sealed at Meera Bagh while in Shahdara (North) Zone 57 properties were sealed in areas like Seema Puri, Navin Shahdara, West Gorakh Park and B-Block Yamuna Vihar. In Shahdara (South) Zone, 13 shops in Gandhi Nagar were sealed.

In City Zone, 26 shops in Parda Bagh, Daryaganj were sealed while in Civil Lines Zone, two properties in Racquet Road and one at Flag Staff Road were sealed.

A huge police 'bandobast' had been made by the MCD in anticipation of protests from traders and common people, he said.

A strong protest met the sealing squads at Sant Nagar which resulted in a brief suspension of the sealing drive.

The traders carried out a massive dharna at Jantar Mantar in the capital to protest the MCD's sealing action. The dharna, held under the banner of the Confederation of All India traders, was attended by a large number of traders from many parts of Delhi.

Trade leaders attending the dharna allged a deep rooted conspiracy to destroy the future of lakhs of traders, their employees and their families.

''No law is above the life and livelihood of lakhs of people and, therefore, the Government should take immedaite steps to protect such a large number of Delhi citizens,''they said.
