Maruti, HSCI car sales jump in August

New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Country's top car maker, Maruti Udyog Ltd, today recorded an 11.5 per cent rise in sales with 51,855 vehicles in August from 46,509 units in the same month last year.

Maruti, sold 48,259 units in the domestic market during the month from 41,717 units a year earlier, up by 16 per cent.

However, its exports slipped 25 per cent at 3,596 units in August from 4,792 units a year ago.

During the month, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI), manufacturer of premium cars in India, recorded a 43.3 per cent growth in sales at 5,247 units in August 2006 as against 3,661 units in August 2005.

The cumulative sales of the company jumped 24.2 per cent at 23,009 units in April-August 2006 as against 18,520 units in April-August 2005.

HSCI sold 3039 units of its Honda City model with 1845 units sold of its newly-launched Honda Civic during the same month.

The sales comprised of 242 units of the Honda Accord model and 121 units of the CRV model.

The company stated it will double the production capacity of its manufacturing unit at Greater Noida from 50,000 cars to 100,000 cars per annum by the end of 2007. Skoda India, fully-owned subsidiary of SkodaAuto, registered a 39 per cent rise in sales at 1,080 units in August 2006, comprising 67 units of its flagship model 'Skoda Superb', as compared to 775 units in the same month last year.

Meanwhile, General Motors India today reported an 18 per cent jump in sales between January-August 2006 at 24,027 units as compared to 20,322 cars in the same period last year.

The August sales of the global auto major comprised 1706 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 312 units of Chevrolet Optra and 702 units of Chevrolet Aveo.

''Despite production, dispatches and delivery getting affected due to floods in Gujarat and many other parts of the country, GM India has been able to register yield-to-date (YTD) growth of 18 per cent. The performance has been up to our expectations keeping in mind the unprecedented flood conditions in Gujarat and Maharashtra'' said GM India Vice President P Balendran.

Another car maker, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) posted a 19.2 per cent rise in sales in January-August at 198,625 vehicles over the January-August sales in 2005.

While domestic sales in this period stood at 123,583 units-- a growth of 18.5 per cent over the previous year, overseas sales during the period were 75,042 units, a jump of 20.4 per cent.

In August 2006, HMIL recorded a combined sale of 26,374 units achieving a growth of 8.5 per cent over the same period last year.

The number of vehicles sold in the domestic market for the month is 16,101 recording a growth of 8 per cent over August'05.

The exports grew by 9.2 per cent with sale of 10,273 units in August'06 over the corresponding month in 2005.

The company sold 23,059 units in the A2 segment, 3,105 units in A3 segment, 157 units in A4 segment, 19 units in A5 segment and 34 units in the SUV segment.

Presently, HMIL markets 32 variants of passenger cars in six segments. The Santro in the B segment, Getz in the B+ segment, the Accent in the C segment, the Elantra in the D segment, the Sonata Embera in the E segment and the Tucson in the SUV segment.
