Srinagar, Sep 1 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha has lauded the bold and effective steps taken by the state government against corruption saying the drive will help in eradicating the menace from the society.

Speaking after presenting the Chief Minister's Gold Medal for honesty, integrity and merit for 2006 to five officers at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) here last evening, he also hoped that Jammu and Kashmir could lead the country in setting a new trend of encouraging men toward honesty and integrity.

The Governor referred to a report categorising Jammu and Kashmir as the second most corrupt state in the country after Bihar.

In a lighter vein, Gen Sinha said he always wondered how the media would comment on him as Bihar was his birth place and Jammu and Kashmir the state where he had worked in different capacities throughout his career.

He exuded confidence that Jammu and Kashmir will make a significant headway in the drive against corruption.

The Governor described corruption as a malady that has been eating up the very vitals of the society, particularly in the Third World though the advanced countries were also facing this challenge.

Corruption was prevalent in every walk of life and the need of the hour was to give a united fight to the scourge, he added.

Gen Sinha appreciated the initiative taken by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad against corruption after assuming the office.

He also recalled a counseling given to him by one of his British commanders, emphasising that bad work should never be allowed to go unpunished and the good work unrecognised.

The corruption-free administrative was a step towards good governance, the Governor added.
