High Court orders probe into death of youth

Imphal, Sep 1 (UNI) The Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench has ordered an inquiry into the killing of a youth by Assam rifles personnel.

The Court directed the Additional District Judge, Manipur East to make an inquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the killing of Pheiroijam Keshorjit Singh by the personnel of 19 Assam Rifles and to submit the inquiry report within four months.

The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) which moved the court over the issue said the matter was placed yesterday before a Division Bench comprising of Justice M Binoykumar Singh and Justice T Nandakumar Singh.

The Human Rights Law Network said on June 20, 2005, Pheiroijam Keshorjit Singh was arrested by a frisking and checking troop of 19 Assam Rifles and later his dead body was found.

There was hue and cry as Keshorjit was working hard to help his parents. The case was filed by Pheiroijam Ibeton Devi, mother of deceased.

The respondents listed in this petition consisted of Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Commander, 10 Sector, Assam Rifles, the Commanding Officer, 19 Assam Rifles, Principal Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur, Director General of Police, Manipur, the Superintendent of Police, Imphal East District.
