Heavy rains disrupt normal life in MP

Bhopal, Sep 1 (UNI) Heavy rains lashing Bhopal and adjoining areas for the last three days disrupted normal life in Madhya Pradesh affecting road, rail and air traffic.

Near flood situation arose with almost all rivers and rivulets in spate and road traffic from the capital to Raisen and Sagar remained affected. Flights were affected as rainwater accumulated on the runway at Bhopal airport.

Many trains were running behind schedule due to heavy rains and flooding of tracks.

Meanwhile the Central team was touring the state to assess the damage caused by heavy rains a fortnight ago, when about 129 people were killed, 8500 heads of cattle perished and 85,000 houses damaged. Highest 24 deaths were reported in the state capital.

Intensity of heavy rains this time was not so severe as those on August 13, when the state capital received record 30 cm rains overnight.

Two youth were washed away while crossing a nullah in Ujjain yesterday. Heavy rains were forecast in Ujjain, Sagar and Gwalior divisions in the next 24 hours.

The Piplai dam in Raisen district breached around noon today and the district authorities sounded high alert and evacuated four villages.

In the last 24 hours, Narsinghgarh recorded 25 cm rainfall, Rajgarh 23 cm, Bhopal 21 cm and Neemuch 10 cm.
