HC asks engineering colleges to conduct five rounds of CAP
Mumbai, Sep 1 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today directed the Government and unaided private engineering colleges to conduct five rounds of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP).
The court had earlier directed that CAP should be conducted until all the seats were filled up.
A division bench comprising justice F I Rebeillo and Anoop Mohta were told that while three rounds of CAP were over, 80 per cent seats were still vacant.
The court today directed that while the fourth round should be conducted through computerised allotment, in the fifth round, the colleges should conduct personal counselling after which the candidates would be selected.
After these five rounds, if seats were still vacant, the colleges could make admissions directly on merit as per the guidelines of the Government.
Appearing on behalf of the Government colleges under the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), the associate Advocate General submitted before the court that Government colleges had barred students already allotted seats in the first and second round from participating in the third round. But the unaided private colleges had allowed the students, who had alloted seats in the first and second rounds, to participate in the third round also.
Thus, as penalty, they must conduct two more rounds of CAP after which the sixth round would be for personal counselling and seventh for direct admissions.
But, Association of Private Colleges counsel Shrihari Ane objected that by allowing the Government colleges only three rounds of CAP, followed by one round of personal counselling and then direct admissions, would not be fair upon the private colleges.
The court, while directing the DTE that the procedure adopted in both Government and private colleges should be the same, passed the said order.
While the engineering colleges will start from tomorrow, the court has also directed to accommadate students admitted late due to the delay in admission process.
