Flood continues in Uttar Pradesh, toll reachers 36

Lucknow, Sep 1 (UNI) At least 36 people have died in floods in various districts of Uttar Pradesh due to diversion of excess water from reservoirs in Nepal.

With the death of three more people during floods, the toll has climbed to seven in Balrampur during the last 24 hours. Besides, traffic was restricted on the Kanvapur-Lalia highway following land erosion in Pahari 'nullah'.

Four people have died in rain-related incidents in Shravasti, where 246 villages were flood-affected.

Owing to land erosion in Rapti, Ganga, Sharda, Saryu and the turbulent Ghagra, flood continues to haunt Faizabad, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Barabanki, Gonda and Lakhimpur Kheri districts.

Houses have been marooned and about five lakh population was affected. Bahraich and Shravasti districts were worst-affected.

Hundreds of villages have inundated in Bahraich, while standing crops worth several lakhs of rupees were also damaged. Besides, 1,500 'kuccha' dwellings have also collapsed.

Central Water Commission said all prominent rivers including Ganga, Sharda, Ghagra and Gandak were flowing above the red mark.

A report from Gonda said hundreds of localities have been inundated by flood water. Rescue work was on with the help of 200 boats.

State relief Commissioner Renuka Kumar told UNI here that in Barabanki 50 per cent of the standing crops had been damaged. Rescue and relief operations were on.

Meanwhile, Ghagra in Ayodhya was flowing 46 cm above the danger mark, while Sharda at Paliakalan was flowing 18 cm above the red mark.

A report from Barabanki and Shravasti said owing to land erosion in Ghagra, 480 villages were adversely affected.

District Magistrate of Bahraich Shankar Lal Pandey said as many as 150 rescue boats and four motor boats have been pressed into relief work. As many as 302 relief camps were also set up to provide succour to the affected people.
