Bangalore, Sep 1 (UNI) Expanding the scope of its existing cooperation, defence aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EADS to target new market segments, mutually cashing in on each other's expertise.

HAL Chairman Ashok K Baweja and EADS CEO Tom Enders inked the MoU here.

Scouting for big defence orders from India both for multirole fighter aircraft and helicopter, besides a host of communication and electronic equipment, EADS aims at growing big in India.

Later, talking to newspersons here, EADS India Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillaume said the HAL tie up was not only intended for the local market, but also for international markets.

He said the company would soon start work jointly with HAL on weaponisation of Dhruv, the advanced light helicopter.

HAL, in a release here, said the two companies would in the coming months carry out a joint analysis of mid-term and long-term strategies on the key segments of aerospace business to determine how both groups could team up and benefit from each other's expertise to develop their activities.

''HAL and EADS are already long-term partners, working together to manufacture helicopters and passenger jets. We appreciate the excellent level of skills in design and manufacturing, which make HAL a valuable partner for global cooperation in aerospace and defence. During my visit to HAL facilities in Bangalore, I was impressed by the quality of production and technological capabilities,'' Dr Enders said.

The EADS team also visited the ISRO headquarters here and held discussions with ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair. EADS had booked two communication satellites to be built on the INSAT-1 platform for two to three tonne class satellites. Integration work on the first satellite W2M booked by Eutelsat would start later this year with the satellite scheduled for launch in 2007. The other satellite was Hylas, an innovative communication satellite to be built for the UK-based Avanti Systems.
