Double Taxation Treaty with Mauritius being re-negotiated
New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Negotiations are on between the Indian government and Mauritius to elimainte some of the loopholes in the controversial Double Taxation Treaty(DTT).
A spokesman of the Central Board of direct taxes (CBDT who gave this information, however, refused to divulge any furter details in this regard, but said that India was keen for a re-negotiation.
"All aspects of the Treaty are being looked into, including a review", he said.
The spokesman said the Supreme Court's judgement in the petition filed by the Azadi Bachao Andolan was a landmark one and said the treaty was signed as India was keen to attract foreign investment.
NGOs have argued that Mauritius is being used a tax haven by some companies and allege misuse of the agreement as many corporates were merely re-routing their investments through the Island nation to take advantage of taxation.
