Docs save housemaid, want Indian Embassy to intervene

Dubai, Sep 1 (UNI) A hospital in Bahrain has refused to discharge a housemaid from Trivandrum, who was admitted in critical condition after being abused by her employers, until the Indian embassy officials took appropriate actions.

Lateefa Beewi Maheen, 30, who started vomiting blood as a result of repeated beatings, collapsed at her sponsor's home on Wednesday and was admitted to the hospital's emergency department for treatment.

The woman suffered severe internal injuries that caused her to vomit blood several times a day, doctors told Gulf Daily News.

The hospital said she would be discharged when Indian embassy officials would take appropriate action.

Maheen said she came to Bahrain hoping to earn money to meet the medical bills of her seven-year-old son who needed expensive treatment for his severe orthopaedic problems.

She paid Rs 20,000 to a recruitment agent to come to Bahrain to work on the promise of a salary of BD40 (Rs 4,900) a month.

When she received two months' wages a few days ago, the agent took away that amount as his fees, Maheen said.
