Srinagar, Sept 1: Categorisation of Jammu and Kashmir as the second corrupt state after Bihar is a scar on its face, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said.

Addressing an investiture ceremony to award the Chief Minister's gold medal to five officers at a function here last evening, he said the drive launched to eradicate corruption and encourage honest and performing officials was aimed at removing this stigma and make it a highly developed and prosperous state in the country.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha presented the gold medal, a cash award of Rs one lakh and a certificate to five officers for honesty, integrity and meritorious service for 2006.

The officers include Commercial Taxes Department Commissioner Bashir Ahmad Khwaja, Finance Department Budget Director Ravi Magotra, Leh Roads and Buildings Superintending Engineer Sonam Morup, Kathua Additional Deputy Commissioner Charanjit Singh and Technical Officer to Superintending Engineer, R&B, Srinagar-Budgam Mushtaq Ahmad.

Greeting the awardees, Mr Azad said all have to work with greater zeal and determination to eradicate corruption, ensure good governance and healthy work culture to serve the people better.

He said many initiatives have been taken during the past ten months to eradicate the menace by adopting two-pronged strategy of taking stringent action against corrupt elements and at the same time encouraging and rewarding the honest and performing officials.

Mr Azad said the awardees would become role model for others and expressed the hope that next year there would be tough competition for the Chief Minister's gold medal and the five officials would be selected from the best 100.
