27 pc quota can't be done at one go: Arjun Singh
Chennai, Sep 1: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today turned down the demand of some UPA allies to implement 27 per cent quota for OBCs in Central educational institutions at one go.
'It is not possible. The decision (to implement quota in a staggered manner) was taken after consensus in a Union Cabinet meeting, attended by representatives of all allies including those from South India,' he told reporters at the airport here.
The PMK, a constituent of the UPA Government, had strongly opposed the Centre's decision to implement reservation in a staggered manner. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi also supported the PMK's demand.
Mr Singh also denied that the UPA Government had failed in implementing the quota at one go.
'It is not a failure. It is a practical solution for a difficult problem,' he added.
On the controversy over singing 'Vande Mataram' in schools, he said singing the national song had never been compulsory. It was only a suggestion and the Government had never made it compulsory in schools, he added.
