New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an explanation from the Government within two weeks on a report earlier this month that three civilians were mistakenly killed by Army personnel in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking suo-motu cognizance of a news report in the Hindu newspaper on August 13, the Commission said that if contents of the report were true, then they raised a serious matter of violation of human rights of the citizens.

A copy of the report should be sent to the Defence Secretary for his comments within two weeks, the Commission said.

According to the report, the killings -- in separate incidents at Chahalpati near Dragmulla and at Bugam -- sparked public anger. The Srinagar-Kupwara highway was blocked by the protestors for hours, the report said.
