ISRO chairman stresses on Atomic energy to solve energy requirements

Mumbai, Aug 31 (UNI) Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Dr G Madhavan Nair today stressed the importance of the Atomic Energy programme in meeting the energy requirements of the country.

Speaking at a function held at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to give away Homi Bhabha prizes to the toppers in various disciplines, Dr Nair said today the space and atomic energy programmes share a synergistic relationship and have reached a state of maturity, largely due to the bold initiatives of the visionaries - Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai.

He mentioned that satellites and launching systems from ISRO are providing services in communications and metrological arena from which the society is reaping rich benefits. The space programme he said is set to expand vastly to other research areas. Chandrayan- the mission to moon - being a prime example of such endeavors.

In his address to the gathering of trainees and scientists, he remarked that his career gained a firm foundation due to the training he received from BARC Training School 40 years back.

The key to development is the building up of homegrown technologies, he said, which can be extended to improvement in healthcare, education, agriculture, rural advancement etc.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Anil Kakodkar in his Presidential Address appreciated the link between basic research and its applications provided by the world class centres of DAE. He mentioned that the chain from research to development, demonstration and deployment is important for the benefit of the country and urged trainees to concentrate on meeting these objectives.

BARC Director Dr S Banerjee said golden jubilee batch of the trainee officers are fortunate to be awarded a Masters/Ph.D Degree by a deemed-to-be University, (Homi Bhabha National Institute).

He said that the science and technology education they receive here will stand them in good stead all through their careers.
