Shimla, Aug 30 (UNI) Senior CPM leader Brinda Karat today criticised the development model being followed in the country, saying female foeticide had reached alarming proportions in the high growth states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

''The pattern of development being followed will disturb the overall social development of the country. The incidences of female feticide, which are highest in Punjab and Haryana, have another entry in Himachal'' she said at a press conference here.

Ms Karat said the female ratio in the state had dropped to an all time low of 803 as against per 1,000 males, according to a sample survey conducted during 2003.

The situation was alarming in 41 villages of the state where the ratio was 800, she said, adding that the development at the present did not take into account the social system of the country.

She said the development pattern being followed in the country was lopsided and did not take into consideration the needs of the local people.
