Devayani sworn in as Palakkad Municipal Chairperson
Palakkad, Aug 31 (UNI) After nearly a year's uncertainity and political drama, United Democratic Front (UDF) Councillor V Devayani was today sworn-in as the Chairperson of the Palakkad Municipal Corporation, following a High court order.
Returning officer M C Srigari administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chairperson.
Though the CPI(M) Councillor A K Chandrankutty had won the chairperson election twice on November 29 and May 24, he refused to take charge as he had won the post with the support from the BJP.
Due to this the post remained vaccant for the last eleven months.
The High Court in an order on August 25 directed Ms Devayani, who had lost the Chairperson election, to assume the office, on a petition filed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member in the 50-member Muncipal Council.
The Chairperson post was reserved to SC/ST candidates.
