Congressmen pay tributes to Beant Singh
Payal, Aug 31 (UNI) Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Shamsher Singh Dullo today presided over the death anniversary function of late Beant Singh as the party leaders hailed their departed leader as a crusader against terrorism.
Besides Mr Dullo, others who addresed the massive gathering on the occasion here, included central leaders Janardhan Dwivedi and Jagmeet Brar, Deputy Chief Minister Ms Rajiner Kaur Bhattal and other Punjab ministers and MLAs.
Paying his tributes, Mr Janardhan Dwivedi said late Beant Singh was a patriot, who had bravely fought against terrorism and completely wiped it out from the state and established the democratic system after restoring peace in the state.
He said the departed soul made great sacrifice furthering the traditions of Congress party, whose senior leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and many others laid down their lives for the country's unity and integrity.
Expressing his serious concern over the deteriorating political culture in the country, Mr Dwivedi claimed that Congress was the only party which still persued the politics of principles and sacrifice and its senior leader Ms Sonia Gandhi sacrificed the highest post of Prime Minister and opted to install Dr Manmohan Singh, a great economist and able administrator as the country's premier.
He said the UPA government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh had adopted effective policies, as a result of which the country had emerged a formidable power in the world.
''The country does not need leaders like L K Adwani and Atal Behari Vajpayee who had always been playing the politics of opportunism and formed unholy alliances just to gain power,'' Mr Dwivedi said.
He said the Congress government in Punjab under the leadership of Capt. Amarinder Singh had made a record development during the last four years and claimed that the people of the state would give another term to the party in the state.
Mr Dullo, while paying his tributes, described Late Beant Singh as a brave and patriotic son of the motherland and said that he had laid down his life in his fight against terrorism and established permanent peace in Punjab.
He said that Beant Singh led the state in most trying period and, with his vast vision and dedication, established democracy in Punjab. Squarely accusing Akali leaders responsible for encouraging terrorism in Punjab, Mr Dulo stated, ''it is an open secret that only the Akalis are fully responsible for the killings of more than 25,000 innocent people in Punjab during terrorism''.
Mr Dullo also read the message of Dr Manmohan Singh in which the prime minister had stated that Sardar Beant Singh had fought terrorism bravely and established democracy in the state.
The Prime Minister described Sardar Beant Singh as the great Hero not only of Punjab but also of the whole country and said that he would always be remembered by the countrymen for his great sacrifice.
