Aizawl, Aug 31 (UNI) Centre is working out some new plans to hand over more powers to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in North Eastern region to usher in all-round development activities.

Before allocating more powers to the ADCs, DONER Ministry will hold a meeting involving all the concerned states to evolve a consensus on the issue, the official sources here today said.

The reason centre's decision is due to the demands made by various tribal based parties and ADC heads in the NE region, where they mentioned that they wants to empower the ADCs in order to involve formulating plans and implementation of various development schemes. The main grievances with the autonomous districts in the NE region are that they are too strictly under the control of the state government, they had too little financial powers and that the heads of the autonomous districts, chief executive members and chairman are given a lower status than those given in other states.

At present, the Centre has completed drafting the amendment of the sixth schedule and has incorporated comments and suggestions gathered from concerned states and councils.

In the North East, Asom, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura have autonomous district councils.
