SPO killed, 5 militants arrested in J

Srinagar, Aug 30 (UNI) Militants shot dead a Special Police Officer (SPO) while security forces arrested five ultras of banned Jaish-e- Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfits in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, an official spokesman said today.

He said militants shot dead SPO Farid Ahmed Khan at Devar Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara this afternoon. A pedestrian also sustained wounds in the firing.

Superintendent of Police, Kupwara V K Kumar told UNI that troops of 19 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) arrested two Jaish militants during a search operation at Lolab valley in Kupwara district. Five hand grenades were also seized from them, he added.

With this, five militants have been arrested by the security forces from north Kashmir during the past 24 hours.

Yesterday, three militants of the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit were arrested by 15 RR troops at Wangam village in Bandipora area of this district in north Kashmir.

The arrested LeT militants were identified as Javed Ahmad Sheikh of Wangam, Feroz Ahmed Magray alias Faisal of Qazipur and Mohd Shafi Khan of Naupura.

On sustained interrogation, the militants said they were Lashkar militants and involved in planting of IED in Putushai village on August 26 and firing on security forces patrol on Aug 16 at Wangam.

Three Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs), 12 UBGL grenades, five hand grenades, two remote control IEDs and two mobile phones were also seized from them.

Security forces busted a militant hideout at Tanta village in Thathri area of Doda district in Jammu region and seized 30 kg of rice, eight blankets, four packets of milk powder, five kg of ghee, two tea packets, five kg sugar, ten kg of dry fruits, ten detonators and five mt fuse wire from it.
