Kozhikode, Aug 30: Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister Arun Shourie today favoured the Centre's move on erecting a temporary bulletproof steel structure around the idol of Lord Ram at Ayodhya to ward off possible terrorist attacks.

"It is an important decision in the wake of escalating terrorist activites allegedly supported by a neigbouring country," he told a meet-the-press programme here.

The government could not overlook the security of large groups of people living around the disputed site at Ayodhya, he said adding providing security cover was the primary responsibility of the administration.

On the increasing number of suicides by debt-ridden farmers following crop failure, he said it was mainly because of the failure of the administration to help sort out their problems.

He said district collectors should be accessible to farmers so that needy could walk up to them to discuss and resolve their problems paving the way of preventing such tragedies.

Mr Shourie said although the government had announced packages for farmers in Vidharbha region in Maharshtra relief measures seldom reached the effected persons.

''There were many packages announced but delivery was dull,'' he said adding a package announced earlier for Vidharbha region was yet to reach the hapless farmers.

He said the media had a great responsibility to go in detail on national issues and bring to fore burning issues of people.

But at present the media gave much focus on life-style journalism such as fashion shows, he said adding major national issues often ignored by even big and largely circulated newspapers in the country, particularly in the national capital.
