Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Dr Virender Singh Sangwan
Hyderabad, Aug 30 (UNI) Dr Virender Singh Sangwan of LV Prasad Eye Institute has been selected for the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for young scientists.
Talking to UNI here, Dr Virender said the award was in recognition for his effective treatment for 'Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency' (damage of ocular cells in the eye due to chemical injury).
''This type of treatment was done here effectively since seven years and I have done 400 operations with 70 per cent success rate.
The project is funded by Department of Bio-technology, Government of India'', he said.
Dr Virender hails from Mandola village of Cherki Dadri mandal in Biwana district of Haryana state.
A graduate from Horward Medical School, he got trained at LV Prasad Eye Institute.
He said a team of doctors from US and Australia had underwent training under him with respect to culturing of ocular surface.
''We are working on certain projects to make this technology available across the country'', he said.
Presently, US, Taiwan, Italy and Japan were following the same technology, he added.
