Punjab Agri Univ claims patent on two natural dyes
Ludhiana, Aug 30 (UNI) Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has filed its first patent application, which is on the use of parts of two plant as natural dyes for dyeing of cotton, wool and silk.
Director of Research Dr B S Dhillon said today that the patent has been provisionally filed based on the research by the Department of Clothing and Textiles, College of Home Science Research. The research on the two dyes was conducted by Dr Sumeet Kang Grewal and Dr Neelam Grewal, he added.
The researchers had observed that certain traditional natural dyes like 'maddar' and 'arjun' are expensive, as these add to the cost of production and reduce profit margin and that the natural dyes for which patent is sought, reduce the commercial cost of dyeing cotton, wool and silk.
The cost factor matches these dyes an ideal replacement for the traditional 'maddar' and 'arjun,' Mr Dhillon said.
