Pondy admn taking steps to encourage sports in UT: Rangasamy

Pondicherry, Aug 30 (UNI) The Pondicherry administration is taking all steps to encourage sports and games in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the legislative assembly today.

Replying to a question, the Chief Minister assured to take steps to provide one per cent reservation for sportpersons in jobs in government corporations and to revive football teams in institutions like AFT, Electricity and Police departments.

While recruiting LDCs during 2004-05, as many as 435 sportspersons had applied for the 12 seats reserved for sportspersons. However, due a stay by the Central Administrative Tribunal, the appointments could not be made, he said adding that the administration would do the needful after vacating the stay.

To another question, Labour Minister E Valsaraj said of the 67,000 workers in 2221 industries in Pondicherry, 6,000 were contract labourers.

The administration was constantly monitoring to ensure that the contract labourers were not working in manufacturing units and regulating the contract labour system. There were 266 contract licensee in Pondicherry, he added.
