PDF castigates Chhattisgarh govt over Vande Mataram issue
Lucknow, Aug 30 (UNI) People's Democratic Front (PDF) today demanded that the Centre instruct the Chhattisgarh government to withdraw the order making the recital of Vande Mataram compulsory in all educational institutions in the state, including madrasas.
Addressing a news conference here, PDF general secretary and All India Muslim Forum (AIMF) chairperson Nehaluddin claimed the order of the Chhattisgarh government violated Article 25 of the Indian constitution, that guaranteed Freedom of Expression to all citizens irrespective of religion.
''We demand that either the order is withdrawn immediately or the President of India dismiss the Chhattisgarh government.'' Mr Nehaluddin observed that merely by singing Vande Mataram, one does not become a patriot.
''Those, who want to infringe this fundamental right of Muslims by making it compulsory for them to recite these 'unislamic words' must realise, that one's love for the country is distinct from worshipping it.'' The AIMF chairperson maintained that the foundation of Indian secularism is based upon multiplicity of religions and not on culture nationalism.
''Vande Mataram, whose opening words mean 'Mother I bow to thee' is totally against the monotheistic faith of Muslims, which does not allow the bowing of head to any entity except Allah.'' He lamented that patriotism of Muslims was being equated with the recital of Vande Mataram. ''Almost eight per cent of those attaining martyrdom in Kargil war were Muslims, so no one should cast aspersions on our devotion and love towards the motherland.'' PDF is a political front chaired by Maulana Abul Irfan Firangi Mahali. Earlier, eminent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwab had relinquished the post of PDF chairman. However, he remains with the Front, comprising seven constituents, as chief patron.
