Lucknow, Aug 30 (UNI) A peculiar situation prevails in UP, with some parts of the state are facing a drought like situation following scanty rains, while some other are sumberged in flood water, as a result of diversion of excess water from reserviors of Nepal.

On Tuesday, at least 40,000 people were reported to be marooned in Barabanki district after excess water was released from river Ghagra.

Sources claimed although the dam built on river Ghagra was not breached, excess water -- released to ease off pressure on the structure -- resulted in flooding of over 25 villages. Most affected villages are in Sirauli Gauspur tehsil.

The water was diverted after Nepal released excess water into the river. Sources said there were no reports of loss of life even as water submerged a 15 km area.

A day after, Bahraich and Balrampur district of East UP, bordering Nepal also faced the wrath of floods.

Since Tuesday, there was a sudden spate in the Ghagra and Rapti rivers due to incessant rain and heavy discharge of water from Nepal reservoirs.

Bahraich and Shrawasti districts faced the flood fury the most.

At least three people and dozens of cattle heads were drowned in Shrawasti while standing crops worth several crores of rupees were damaged in Bahraich. Six people were killed in separate incidents here.

Meanwhile, in Balrampur, more than 50 villages were submerged by flood water. The Rapti river was rising menacingly.

The situation was very grave in Kauwapur, Mahrajganj, Laukahwa, under Tulsipur tehsil, where the Pahari Nala was on spate.

In Bahraich and Shrawasti districts hundreds of villages were inundated and about one lakh people were marooned.

The 97-km-long Belha-Behroli dam was damaged at two places. But there was no independent confirmation about the damage.
