OIC invites Mirwaiz to Ministerial meeting in NY

Srinagar, Aug 30: The Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has invited Hurriyat Conference (moderate faction) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to attend the ministerial meeting of its Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir in New York on September 21.

The 56-member grouping, through its Secretary General Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has also invited him to attend the annual coordination meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the OIC states to be held during the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 25.

However, it was not yet clear if the grouping has invited Hurriyat Conference (breakaway) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani to the forthcoming meetings.

Significantly, the OIC had dropped the hardline leader from its guest list in the past such several meetings.

Mr Geelani had accused Pakistan of influencing the OIC decision and charged Islamabad with using its good offices in getting the invitation for the Mirwaiz.

It was also not yet clear if the Mirwaiz would attend the meetings. The Hurriyat Conference enjoys the status of an Observer at the OIC.
