Bangalore, Aug 30 (UNI) Widening its Research and Development domain, the Indian arm of the Chinese Telecom major Huawei Technologies India has added two new technologies by creating a new facility.

The Chinese telecom giant, which was six-year-old in India, had emerged a major and critical arm for software development in the telecom sector for its parent company and currently had a staff strength of 1200, 95 per cent of them being Indians.

Recognising the importance of the technological capability of India in the telecom sector, last week Huawei added optical network and Wireleass LAN (local area network) as the new domains for development of technology and products and had dedicated 200 staff for the purpose, Mr George Huang, Chief Operating Officer, Huawei Technologies India, told UNI.

Currently operating out of three facilities in Bangalore, covering a total area of around 200,000 sq ft, with half of it located in a five star hotel, the company had already procured a 20-acre plot in IT companies-dominated Whitefield area for building its own facilities. The facility would be operational by the end of 2008 and capable of housing 2000 people. The total investment planned was 100 million US Dollars.

''This is only the first phase of our expansion plan,'' Mr Huang said, adding that Huawei was keen on utilising the software skills of India to match with its hardware arm in China.

The R and D centre had achieved stronger domain expertise in areas such as next generation network, datacomm, telecom middleware, network management, operations support system and intelligent network and had filed more than 200 patents, Mr George informed.

He said Huawei had reported a turnover of 8.2 billion Dollars last year, registering a sales of over 50 per cent outside China for the first time (58 per cent).
