Arrested editor kept under judicial custody

Surat, Aug 30 (UNI) Editor of the Surat based Gujarati evening daily Surat Samna, Manoj Shinde is being kept under judicial custody, police sources informed.

Mr Shinde was arrested yesterday for publishing an editorial in his newspaper's on Monday using objectionable language against Chief Minister Narendra Modi, State Health Commissioner, Amarjit Singh and other government officials.

City police commissioner Sudhir Sinha said the language used in the editorial was highly objectionable and the police found it seditionary.

''That is why he has been arrested according to various sections of the Indian Penal Code including, section 124(a),'' Mr Sinha informed.

Meanwhile, various media organisations in Surat, met city police commissioner and submitted a memorandum against the arrest of the editor.

Later media persons alleged that an ''undeclared emergency'' is prevailing in Surat.
