Abhijeet wins 35th Parsvnath National Junior Chess Championship
New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) Grandmaster norm holder Abhijeet Gupta won the 35th Parsvnath National Junior Chess Championship defeating B Adhiban of Tamil Nadu in the 10th and final round game here today.
After a disastrous loss against Aswin Jayaram of Tamil Nadu in the penultimate round game yesterday, the Bhilwara based teenager came back strongly to outwit Adhiban to lift the title for the second time. Abhijeet had won the title in 2002 when it was held in Nagpur and his record of being the youngest ever champion still remains intact.
Abhijeet ended the tournament on 8.5 points out of a possible 10, winning eight, losing one and conceding a sole draw to G Rohit of Andhra Pradesh.
The second place went to former champion G N Gopal of Kerala who defeated Aswin Jayaram in the final round to finish the event on eight points. Also tying for second and finishing third on tiebreak was Abhishek Das of Jharkhand who came up with a splendid effort to beat S P Sethuraman in the final round.
Meanwhile, Soumya Swaminathan of Maharashtra won the 21st edition of the girls' championship on better tiebreak than top seed Mary Ann Gomes of West Bengal. Both Mary and Soumya scored 7.5 points out of nine rounds, but Soumya had much superior Bucholz count, the system employed here to resolve the tiebreak. P Sivasankari of Tamil Nadu finished third on seven points.
