9 Nominations for Purulia, 2 for Katwa LS by-polls

Purulia, Aug 30 (UNI) Three persons filed their nominations on the last day today for the by-election to the Purulia Lok Sabha seat, raising the total number to nine.

The Katwa Parliamentary seat is slated to witness a straight fight between CPI(M)'s Abu Ayes Mondol and Trinamool Congress's Sushanta Ghosh.

Scrutiny of the nominations would be held tomorrow while the dates for withdrawal are September one and two. Election to the seats are slated for September 16.

Among the nine contestants for the Purulia seat are Forward Bloc's Narahari Mahto, Congress's Santiram Mahto, Janata Dal (United)'s Dhirendranath Mahto and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Surja Narayan Mahto.

Election to the seat was necessitated by the resignation of Forward Bloc's Birsingh Mahto following his conviction by a local court.

In Katwa the by-poll was caused by the death of CPI(M)'s Mehboob Zaidi on April 10.
