3 ABVP leaders surrender in Prof attack case

Ujjain, Aug 30 (UNI) Three ABVP leaders, including its Madhya Pradesh unit President Shashi Ranjan Singh and Organising Secretary Vimal Tomar, surrendered before the police here today in connection with the violence after postponement of students union elections at Madhav College here on Saturday.

Police said Shashi Ranjan, Tomar and Bhanu Bhadoria, who were wanted in connection with vandalism and blackening the face of Election Officer Prof M L Nath, were presented before Judicial Magistrate R C Maria, who remanded them to judicial custody till September 7 after rejecting their bail plea.

With this, total arrests so far in connection with students violence rose to 31. However, no arrest has been made so far in connection with the death of Prof H S Sabharwal, who was the target of students attack after sudden postponement of students union elections. A case of murder has been registered in this connection against 'unknown' persons.

As many as 23 people, mostly Congress workers, who courted arrest today, were remanded to jail by the Judicial Magistrate.

Ujjain Municipal Corporation chairperson Azad Yadav, City Youth Congress President Ravi Bhadoria, NSUI District President Dheeraj Yadav and former Corporator Yogesh Sharma were among the arrested in connection with assaulting Prof Nath.

Five ABVP workers, who were arrested in Prof Nath case yesterday, were granted bail.

Meanwhile, on the directive of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a CID team, led by I G M P Dwivedi, started investigations, following which the ABVP leaders surrendered at the Dewas Gate police station.

A magisterial inquiry had already been ordered into the students violence, which drew countrywide condemnation. The more than a century-old Government Madhav College was reopened today, but no students turned up.

Opposition Congress, led by PCC President Subhash Yadav and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jamuna Devi, staged day-long dharna in front of the Chief Minister's residence demanding among others CBI inquiry into the Madhav College violence. On the call of the Congress, the temple town observed a total and peaceful bandh on Monday.

Former Principal Shachindra Upadhyaya also died of shock on Sunday after hearing about the maltreatment towards his former colleagues.
