11 die in UP and WB, rains in capital, MP, drought conditions in AP

New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) Eleven people --nine in Uttar Pradesh and two in West Bengal-- died in rain and flood related incidents while monsoon revived in Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh continued to reel under drought-like conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, six people died in Bahraich district and three in Shrawasti as many districts of UP, contiguous to Nepal have been affected after excess water was diverted from reserviors of the Himalayan Kingdom.

Over 15 lakh people have been affected by floods, which have hit parts of Uttar Pradesh.

The office of the Relief Commissioner said here Army had deployed motor-boats in Barabanki district to save the marooned.

In Madhya Pradesh, after a brief lull, monsoon activity revived in the state with heavy rainfall in the eastern part.

Meteorological department spokesperson said a low pressure area has developed near Chhattisgarh due to which rainfall was expected in Jabalpur, Rewa, Sagar, Hoshangabad, Indore and Bhopal divisions in the next 24 hours.

Besides Jabalpur division, monsoon was active in the state's southern and eastern part overnight.

The chief amounts of rainfall were in Satna (5 cm), Narsinghpur (5), Devari (5), Kevlari (5), Lanji (4), Ghansaur (4), Varaseoni (4), Seoni (3), Balaghat (3) and Damoh (3).

Since morning, intermittent rainfall occurred the state capital, which has received 1,219 mm rainfall, 353 mm more than average rainfall.

Meanwhile, a report from Raipur said, heavy rains occurred in Raipur and Bastar divisions besides some parts in Bilaspur divisions, overnight courtesy a low pressure area built over the Bay of Bengal and advancing towards Chhattisgarh's Raipur.

Keshkal in Bastar division turned out to be the wettest place overnight recording 16 cm rainfall, while 10 cm rainfall occurred in Kondagaon, 9 cm in Narayanpur, 10 cm in Sarangadh, 10 cm in Nagri, 11 cm in Dhamtari, seven cm in Kasdol and 14 cm in Saraipali.

According to flood control room, 45,000 cusec water was released from Sondhur dam, while 16,000 cusec water was released from Sikaser dam on Pairi river.

The district collectors of affected districts were informed about the release of water from dams.

Traffic was thrown off gear along Raipur-Jagdalpur National Highway near Keshkal due to heavy rainfall last night. Normal traffic movement was restored after rainfall stopped this morning.

In Uttar Pradesh, since yesterday, there was a sudden spate in the Ghagra and Rapti rivers due to incessant rain and heavy discharge from Nepal.

The Relief Commissioner's office said while 47,000 people were affected in Balrampur, 11,000 were affected in Barabanki. The floods have affected 25,000 people in Bahraich, while the number in Gonda stood at 76,000. In Bahraich, while a total of 36 villages were facing the flood fury, 12 of them were submerged in deep waters.
