BSF seeks deportation of ULFA leader
Shillong, Aug 29: The Border Security Force pesonnel has urged the Bangladesh Rifles to deport United Liberation of Asom (ULFA) leader Golap Baruah alias Anup Chetia to India.
The BSF raised this issue during the four-day annual border co-ordination committee conclave which begins here today at the BSF's frontier headquarters.
The meeting also deliberated on the need for effective border management, peace and tranquility on the border.
The Indian delegation led by Inspector General BSF in-charge Tripura, Cachar and Mizoram frontier S K Dutta reminded the BDR delegation, led by its Deputy Director General Brigadier General S M Ghulam Rabbani, on the need of handing over the jailed ULFA leader and other top Indian insurgent groups leaders, sheltering in Bangladesh.
Presently, ULFA 'General Secretary' known as Chetia is under detention in Dhaka jail after being arrested on December 21, 1997.
He was charged with illegally entering Bangladesh using a forged passport, possession of illegal foreign currency from 16 different countries, illegal possession of arms and illegal possession of a satellite phone.
The Indian frontiers guards also handed over a list of Indian insurgent groups, their hide-outs/training camps in Bangladesh and the illegal arms supply to anti-India elements, BSF PRO M N Sajjan said.
Mr Sajjan said the BSF officials also raised the issue of Indian insurgent groups/criminals, using Bangladesh soil as their safe sanctuary to hide abducted government officials and children for ransom.
The BSF delegation also registered a strong protest on the recent unprovoked firing by the BDR at Zakiganj in Cachar sector of Assam, killing two Indian women and injuring an 11-year-old child.
The meeting also deliberated on issues related to installing of border fencing along the zero line, which was strongly objected by Dhaka, saying that New Delhi had violated the Indira-Mujib pact.
