Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 28 (UNI) With incidents of atrocities and harassment against women, including eve-teasing, increasing in the city, the City Police has constituted a special team to nab the accused in buses, bus-stands, railway stations and other busy places.

City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said the squad was formed following a complaint from a group of girl students on the police portal about eve-teasing.

Kerala's roads are notoriously unsafe for women, especially after dusk. Those who use buses regularly have often complained about unwelcome male attention, including intentional physical contact, he said.

The 17-member special squad, named ''Shadows,'' functioning under a Deputy SP, includes seven women police personnel, Mr Abraham told UNI.

''The main aim of the squad is to protect women and girl students from physical contact in buses and at other busy points by neurotic people,'' he said, adding the experiment has been a success so far.

The modus operandi of the 'Shadows' was deployment of women police in mufti at bus-stands, railway stations, busy places and in buses to apprehend eve-teasers.

Their male couterparts would follow them and if anybody tried to indulge in physical contact, misbehaved or abused women, they would be immediatly taken into custody.

The squad, which started its operation two months ago, had already trapped 600 eve-teasers who have been punished.
