Notorious gang of jewellery thieves busted
Hardwar, Aug 27 (UNI) The police and the Special Operation Group (SOG) teams of Hardwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts have arrested five members of a highly notorious interstate gang of jewellery thieves at Saliyar check post near Roorkee.
Director General of the state police Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya announced a cash reward of Rs 20,000 for the police teams which took part in the joint operation yesterday and nabbed Angrez, the gang leader, along with his four accomplices.
Police said the thieves had confessed that so far they had looted jewellery worth Rs 25 crores from 50 leading jewellers of the country. Their next target was the famous PP Jewellers of Delhi, they confessed.
They had also looted five revolvers from the Prakesh Gun House in Mainpuri (UP) and a gun along with Rs 50,000 from the petrol pump owner at Saifai (UP) who is reported to be a relative of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the police said, adding that they had recovered jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh and a big cache of arms.
