Farmers protest setting up of SEZ project on agricultural land

Amritsar, Aug 27 (UNI) A large number of farmers held a protest meeting at village Jheeta Kalan near here to register their anguish against the Punjab Government's move to hand over 1217 acres of fertile land to the DLF company for the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project, which was announced by the Prime Minister in 2004.

The meeting, which was summoned jointly by nine farmers' organisations, unanimously decided that they would oppose the government move by all means and even approach the Apex Court against the nefarious designs of Capt Amarinder Singh government, which according to them had shifted the site, earlier decided for the project, to provide huge benefits to big colonisers.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Satnam Singh of Zamhori Kisan Sabha Punjab stated that the move of Captain Amarinder Singh will force the farmers to adopt aggitational approach to seek justice.

He said resident of villages--Manawala, Jheeta Kalan, Bhagatupura, Pandori, Mehma, Jheeta Khurd, Rakhjhee, who had made a forum under the banner of ''Ujjara Roko'', the action committee of the forum would burn in effigy the Punjab government and Central government at GT Road near Daburji for their anti-peasant policies.

The meeting was also addressed by senior SAD (Badal) leaders Malkiat Singh, Balraj Singh Sultanwind, Jimal Singh Varpal, Bikkramjit Singh Nawanpind and Rattan Singh of CPI (M) also echoed for the protection of farmers at the cruel hand of Capt Amarinder Singh.
