6 Bangladeshis detained in Meghalaya
Shillong, Aug 26 (UNI) The Meghalaya police today detained six people, suspected to be Bangladeshis, as a part of its anti-infiltration drive conducted in and around the state capital.
During the drive, police said 295 people were picked up from Jhalupara and Cantonment areas to ascertain their identities.
Of the 295, fifteen were deported back to Asom after failing to produce their documents, which according to them were in their hometown, poice said.
However, 274 others were released after they verified their citizenship.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police A R Mawthoh appealed to officials to stop issuing residential certificates to any person(s) without valid documents.
Late last night, the Khasi Jaintia Labour Union detained about 100 suspected Bangladeshi nationals near Barapani. Later, the Union handed over the suspected infiltrators to the state police.
