2.5 lakh Congressmen court arrest in MP

Bhopal, Aug 26 (UNI) In response to the call given by the Madhya Pradesh Congress, about 2.5 lakh Congress workers today staged a demonstration and courted arrest across the state under the 'Jail Bharo Andolan' protesting against the ''anti-public'' policies of the BJP Government.

The demonstration was organised alleging deterioration of law and order, rise of atrocities against minorities and women and absence of relief for those affected by natural calamities.

Claiming success, Congress Spokesperson K K Mishra said about 10,000 party workers -- including party spokesperson Manak Agrawal, party General Secretary Deep Chand Yadav and former minister Captain Jaipal Singh -- courted arrest in three areas of the state capital.

State Congress President Subhash Yadav courted arrest along with about 5,000 party workers at Kasravad in Khargone.

Besides, about 30,000 Congressmen were arrested from various block headquarters in the district under section 151 but were released later on a personal bond.

Mr Mishra said except Indore, party workers courted arrest in all 487 divisions under 60 organisational districts. As a part of the campaign, Congressmen would court arrest in Indore on August 28.

A UNI report from Ujjain said, police temporarily arrested 500 Congressmen, who were lodged in jails.

A memorandum was submitted in the name of the Governor at all places.
