Relief to people as Nagarjuna sluice gates are closed

Vijayawada, Aug 25 (UNI) With the 26 crest gates of Nagarjunasagar Reservoir closed midnight last night after inflow from Jurala and Srisailam reservoirs came down, irrigation officials stopped discharging surplus water to Prakasam Barrage, giving relief to people living in low lying areas here.

Prakasam Barrage Superintendent Banerjee told UNI floods in the River Krishna would recede by tonight.

Meanwhile, today, 2.90 lakh cusecs of water were dsicharged into the sea and 17,355 cusecs released into irrigation canals from Prakasam Barrage till 0900 hours this morning.

The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) stood at 12.8 feet and of the 70 crest gates, 50 were lifted to seven feet and the rest to six feet to let the water out into the Bay of bengal.

As low lying areas downstream were still water-logged, 4000 people were taking shelter in four relief camps in the city.

They would be sent back to their homes after the water receded.
