9 killed, 7 injured in road accidents

Bangalore, Aug 25 (UNI) Nine people, including five women, were killed in two road accidents in Tumkur district of Karnataka today.

Six labourers, including five women, drowned when a tractor in which they were travelling fell into the brimming Hemavathi canal near Kankuppe village.

Police said the tractor, carrying nine labourers, was on the way to the workspot when the mishap occurred. While three of them swam to safety, the others met with a watery grave.

Fire Force personnel fished out all the six bodies from the canal.

In another mishap, three people were killed and seven others seriously injured when a van in which they were travelling hit a tree near Kadenahalli in Chiknayakanahalli district this morning.

Police said the occupants of the van were proceeding from Bangalore to Belagur village to attend a marriage when the mishap occurred.

The deceased were identified as Venugopala (28), Seetharam (26) and Gopala (29).

Police said while five of the injured were admitted into a hospital in Chiknayakanahalli, the remaining were shifted to a private hospital in Bangalore.
