Student-bus workers clash leaves 15 injured

Barrackpore, Aug 24 (UNI) At least nine students and six bus workers were injured in a clash between them and subsequent police lathi charge at Sodepur under Khardah police station in North 24 Parganas today.

Police said the trouble began when a group of students attacked a private bus terminus to vent anger against a bus accident yesterday that caused injuries to a class VII student of Sukchar Kedarnath Poddar High School.

They also ransacked a bus workers' union office, damaged half a dozen buses, uprooted a timber hut and a sideway hotel in which bus workers were wounded.

CITU affilated bus workers union General Secretary Kanai Banerjee alleged that at least six workers were injured in the attack.

Headmaster of the school, Ravindra Kumar Singh, who went to the spot after receiving the news, also sustained injuries from pelting stones. He was provided first aid.

Meanwhile police was called, who used lathis to disperse the warring groups.

Five wounded students were sent to local hospital for treatment.

The fight disrupted traffic for more than one hour on B.T. Road in north of Kolkata.

Meanwhile, the injured student who was admitted to hospital yesterday is reportedly recovering well, the Headmaster said.

Police is yet to arrest any one so far, SDPO Belgharia M Akhtar said adding that no specific complaint was lodged with the police in this connection.
