New Delhi, Aug 24 (UNI) The Department of Space (DOS) has told the Telecom Regulator, TRAI, that it was using spectrum resources to provide various services such as telecommunications, Radio, Village Resources Centre through the INSAT.
Sharing this information with the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and IT Shakeel Ahamad said in a written reply it is very necessary to protect the country's existing national assets and to ensure continued availability of the spectrum to sustain and enlarge these INSAT services through planned satellite missions in the coming years.
The DOS has said that any spectrum allocations to new terrestrial services/applications, in frequency bands which are already being used by Indian satellite systems.
The Minister said TRAI is also ''seized with the matter'' relating to spectrum allocation for 3G services by cellular mobile operators using GSM and CDMA technologies.
A spectrum policy would take into account all relevant issues, including spectrum allocation issues for 3G services.
Neverthless, there is no constraint on spectrum availability for the spread of exisiting second generation (2G) mobile services in the rural areas.
