Police lathicharge anti-quota students' rally, 7 injured

Kolkata, Aug 24 (UNI) At least seven students were injured when police lathicharged a peaceful procession today protesting against the Reservation bill brought by the Centre.

The incident took place this afternoon when an anti-reservation rally was stopped from heading towards Dalhousie square.

''Police baton charge was absolutely unneccesary and unprovoked,'' students' representative Dr Kalyan Ashis Mukherjee told UNI.

''We are protesting for a cause and were heading for a destination when police baton charged us,'' he said.

He said at least seven students were injured and taken to the Medical College and Hospital.

Official sources said the incident occurred when the rally deviated from its designated route along the arterial Central Avenue, and dividing in two, one headed along the B B Ganguly street towards Lal Bazar, the police headquarters.

Official sources, however, denied there was any baton charge.

They said the police just stopped the students from entering Lalbazar street.
