IRCTC to set up Rail Neer plants

New Delhi, Aug 24 (UNI) Buoyed by the success of its packaged drinking water for rail travellers, the government today announced that Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will set up plants for manufacturing ''Rail Neer'' in a phased manner throughout the country.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Railway R Velu said such a measure would go a long way in ensuring sale of quality packaged drinking water on railway premises and in trains.

So far, two plants -- Nangloi (Delhi) and Danapur (Bihar) -- have been set up for manufacturing 'Rail Neer'.

''Wherever 'Rail Neer' is not available, Zonal Railways are free to procure supply from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)-approved brands of packaged drinking water,'' he said, adding that regular checks and inspections at various levels were being conducted to ensure quality.

Action was taken in case of detection of deficiencies or irregularities, the minister informed.

He said a few complaints of sale of inferior quality of mineral water had been received and suitable action taken thereon.
