New Delhi, Aug 24 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has deplored the way National Women's Commission Chairman Girija Vyas reacted to his Government's scheme of paying a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the family of any woman dying in hospital during childbirth.

''Instead of appreciating the state Government's scheme launched as one of the measures to empower women, Ms Vyas has run down the scheme,'' he said while talking to news persons after attending a meeting of the members of Parliament of his state here last night.

Ms Vyas should have got full details of the scheme before running down the scheme, he said.

Mr Chouhan was reacting to Ms Vyas' remark that greedy people would let expectant mothers die during child birth rather than take them to hospital so that they could get Rs 50,000 as compensation.

Mr Chouhan said the scheme provides for payment of compensation in case of deaths during childbirth in hospital, not at home. ''The people in Madhya Pradesh are no so cruel and inhuman as to let their women die during child birth just to get compensation,'' he said.

Mr Chouhan listed the various measures taken by his Government to empower women including the one to get the daughters of families living below the poverty line married off with state government help.
