Sensex swings 205 pts to close down at 11,406.65

Mumbai, Aug 23: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) in a volatile day of trading swung 205 points touching a high of 11,579.92 and the low of 11,374.86, as heavy selling in the blue chip companies weighed on the sensex alongwith the surge in crude oil price to US Dollar 72.69 per barrel mark.

The sensex tripped 96 points to close at 11,406 compared to the previous figure of 11,502.62 points, this is second day in consecution that the market has gone down considerably in the last half an hour of trading largely on account of heavy selling and profit bookings.

The total traded value of share on the BSE was put at 672.90 crores today.

The Midcap was down by 1.12 per cent to 4759.37 points and the Smallcap was down by 1.34 per cent to 5748.18.

All the indices on the BSE were down in the red led by Consumer Durables segment which was down by 2.41 per cent to 2987.06 points, and followed by Metals down 1.58 per cent to 8083.76 points, FMCG down by 1.35 per cent to 1950.65 points and Auto sector down by 1.44 per cent to 4879.75 points.

Major gainers on the index were NTPC up by 1.02 per cent to Rs 124.10, Satyam Computers up by 0.98 per cent to Rs 801.95, BHEL was up by 0.48 per cent to Rs 2249.25, Dr Reddy's Lab was up by 0.40 per cent to Rs 1,445.55, Gujarat Ambuja Cement was up by 0.27 per cent to Rs 110.00, Tata Motors was up by 0.22 per cent to Rs 847.50 and Reliance Communications was up 0.02 per cent to Rs 290.50 Besides the losers on the index were HDFC down by 2.91 per cent to Rs 1279.35, Cipla down by 2.25 per cent to Rs 245.80, Bajaj Auto down by 2.25 per cent to Rs 2689.00, Tata Steel down by 1.80 per cent to Rs 506.00, SBI down by 1.74 per cent to Rs 862.60, ITC down by 1.73 per cent to Rs 178.55, Ranbaxy down by 1.67 per cent to Rs 385.40, Hindalco down by 1.49 per cent to Rs 161.80, Maruti Udyog down by 1.46 per cent to Rs 825.55 and L&T was down by 1.39 per cent to Rs 2358.05.

The breadth in the broader market was in favour of 1,631 declines, as against 889 advances and 58 unchanged scrips out of total 2578 scrips that traded on the BSE counters today.
