New Delhi, Aug 22: Tally (India) Pvt Ltd, accounting software provider, today tied up with the Delhi University for providing vocational training in the field of accounts and finance.

Under the alliance, Tally (India) will provide training on the popular accounting software to undergraduates across 57 colleges of the Delhi University (DU).

''The growing demand for trained manpower and the dearth of vocational courses especially in the arts and commerce domain are the key drivers for this tie up,'' Tally (India) General Manager (Sales, Education and Business Training) Gopi M G told reporters here.

Tally (India), with a current user base of 20 million, plans to increase its network to 1500 acadamies from the current level of 900 by March next year, Mr Gopi said.

Though the training programme is open for all courses including Maths and Economics Honours, more commerce graduates are expected to come in. ''Since majority of graduates in DU do not opt for the Masters degree, this course will positively benefit the undergraduates who want a career in accounting,'' Dean of Colleges, DU, Shirin Rathore said.

This is the first initiative taken by DU in the field of accounting and finance, and is sure to boost employment opportunities in the sector, Prof Rathore added.

''We plan to start the same programme in the campus of open learning of the university. I have also spoken to the business chambers FICCI and CII, for a centralised placement cell in DU to tap more job opportunities for the students here.'' The two months programme, for which the company has invested Rs 50 lakh, has already kicked off in the Guru Govind Singh Khalsa College and is expected to start in other colleges like Kamla Nehru, Gargi and SRCC by the first week of September.

The first batch, comprising of 40 students, is being charged a fee of Rs 1800 per candidate. Meanwhile, the financial accounting software is being offered to the colleges free of cost.

Tally (India) plans to partner with academia across the country, and is in talks with other universities also, Mr Gopi said but declined to give further details.

Currently, it has an alliance with the Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) and other universities like Bangalore and Himachal Pradesh.

About three million students pass out every year from the University of Delhi.
