Mentally retarded children to get sport training in MP

Bhopal, Aug 22 (UNI) With a view to nurturing sporting talent of mentally challenged children, training in sports, including in football, would be provided to them, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said.

''Special instructors would be arranged for the purpose,'' said Mr Chouhan yesterday, while inaugurating the three-day national football training camp organised for mentally challenged children at the Tatya Tope stadium here by the Sports and Youth Welfare department.

Mentally challenged children from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, New Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are participating in the camp, from which players would be selected for Indian team.

Mr Chouhan hoped that the Indian Football Team would give an outstanding performance at special Olympic 2007 to be held at Shanghai in China, an official release here said.

''Even mentally challenged children have talent and should be given opportunity to exhibit it. Training camps and competitions in other games should also be organised,'' he said.

Social Justice Minister Rampal Singh said a special campaign was underway for the welfare of the differently able persons and 1,000 camps had been organised in the past one year.

Air Vice Martial (retd) Denzil Kealar said mentally challenged children can contribute a lot too, as they had inherent qualities.

Health Minister Ajay Vishnoi and Madhya Pradesh Olympic Association President Mahesh Joshi were present, the release added.
