UK plot investigators have "substantial material"
LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) British police investigating an alleged plot to bomb as many as 10 aircraft have uncovered ''substantial material'', according to Home Secretary John Reid.
Speaking on the ABC US television channel's ''This Week'' programme late yesterday, Reid also said the threat of a terrorist attack remained high.
''What I can say is that the police and security authorities are content that their investigation is rewarding substantial material which would allow them to take forward the judicial process,'' Reid said.
''There is a continuing attempt by terrorists, not only here, but throughout Europe and elsewhere (to attack),'' he added.
Reid gave no further details of the material, but said suspects could be charged within the next few days.
Police are still questioning 23 British-born Muslims, mainly of Pakistani descent, who were arrested in raids during the investigation into the alleged plot to blow up as many as 10 aircraft flying between Britain and United States.
Today police must either charge, release or apply to a judge for more time to question two of the suspects. Permission to hold the other 21 remains in place until Wednesday.
With a judge's ruling, terrorism suspects can be held for up to 28 days without charge under new powers introduced last month.
Pakistan has also arrested seven people in the case, including at least two British nationals.
