Sensex surges 46 points in volatile trade, closes at 11,511.68

Mumbai, Aug 21 (UNI) In a volatile trade the Bombay Stock Exchange Index (Sensex) oscillated both in the negative and positive territory, finally closing the day with a profit of 46 points.

Though the Sensex closed high at 11,511.68 points, the total turnover on BSE dwindled to Rs 2,520 crore compared to Rs 3,238 crore on Friday.

The S&P CNX Nifty rose 9.25 points, to close on 3,366.

The BSE Sensex today after opening in the green went down obliquely tracking the weak Asian market, picking up later in the day following the listing of GMR Infrastructure funds and enthused investors, who bought the blue chip stocks.

Amongst the BSE sectoral indices the FMCG sector was down 0.11 per cent to 1982.14 points, HC was down by 0.10 to 3553.12 and O&G was down by 0.39 per cent to 5473.48 points, amongst the few gainers were Auto sector up buy 1.12 per cent to 4979.16 points, Banking sector was up by 1.74 per cent to 5192.12 points and Consumer Durables was up by 0.10 per cent to 2985.98 points.

The major gainers on the index today are Bajaj Auto up 2.34 per cent to Rs 2773.60, Infosys technologies 2.09 per cent to Rs 1798.45, Grasim Industries up 1.91 per cent to Rs 2173.00, Reliance Industries up by 1.18 per cent to Rs 1068.00, ACC up by 1.17 per cent to Rs 913, Tata Motors up by 1.09 per cent to Rs 859, Satyam Computers up by 0.96 per cent to Rs 800.50, ICICI up by 0.78 per cent to Rs 594.35, Cipla up by 0.68 per cent to Rs 251.30 and SBI up by 0.46 per cent to Rs 882.70.

Besides the losers on the index are Reliance Energy down by 1.76 per cent to Rs 448.35, Ranbaxy down by 1.76 per cent to Rs 400.85, ONGC down by 1.67 per cent to Rs 1,190, Dr Reddy's Lab down by 1.50 per cent 1472.55, Hero Honda down by 1.32 per cent to Rs 696.35, HDFC down 0.92 per cent Rs 1289.90, Tata Steel down by 0.84 per cent to Rs 508.25, HLL down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 235.85, NTPC down by 0.48 per cent to Rs 124.20 and HDFC bank down by 0.43 per cent to Rs 836.80.

The breadth in the broader market was in the favour of 1,451 advances as against 1,037 declines and 83 unchanged scrips out of total 2,571 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.
